J’s Origin Story

I’ve always been drawn to musical instruments— taking lessons since age twelve. I’m fascinated by them and the sounds they make! Most of all, I’m fascinated by the distinct things they each have to teach us about music.

I grew up in Ann Arbor, MI and played Tuba and Bass-Trombone at Pioneer High School. I attended Michigan State University and graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a specialization in Music Education and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies.

As a high school student, our band program traveled to China and played on the Great Wall. Our Music Program (Band, Orchestra, Choir) won a grammy that year for outstanding program.

At MSU, I became a Spartan Tuba in the Spartan Marching Band. We traveled to the Rose Bowl in 2014. I marched sousaphone in the Rose Bowl Parade (5+ miles).

I performed tuba with the Michigan State Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Symphony under the direction of Dr. Cormac Cannon, Dr. David Thornton, Dr. John T. Madden, and Dr. Kevin Sedatole. I performed on bass trombone with Jazz Orchestras II and III under the direction of Bernard Long Jr., Michael Dease, Etienne Charles, and Rodney Whitaker.

I currently perform in the Lansing and mid-Michigan area on tuba, trombone, and bass guitar. I’ve been teaching here for 10 years, playing tuba for 20 years. I perform tuba/bass with an Eastern-European Brass Band, Slavistar, trombone in the LCC jazz band and with several other small ensembles including trombone polka band and bass in a church band!

When I have the time, I still take lessons. Music has been incredibly formative and healing. In many ways, it has sustained me.
